Scott Employee of the Month : May – Bernie Hughes

Bernie Hughes win Employee of the Month for May at Scott Honda & Scott Select.Sometimes the Employee of the Month is picked because of an amazing act of kindness we saw or a great letter written by a customer for their outstanding customer service, and other times folks receive this award because day in and day out they embody what a prototypical, wonderful employee should be.

This is indeed the case with Bernie Hughes, our May Employee of the Month.  Bernie can often be seen giving top-notch customer service or teaching new sales people the ropes on the showroom floor or helping with all the little things that need to be done on a day-to-day basis that help this ship sail. (pun intended)

“I come in to work and do my best to be helpful,” he says.  “There’s a satisfaction that comes from participating in something that’s good!”

Bernie doesn’t help to get thanked or to receive accolades, it’s just in his nature and it’s how he goes through each day, wherever he is.

“I try to take ownership of the dealership,” Bernie told Sconda Blog.  “It’s not just a place that I go to work, so if I can be helpful I will, and I have the same attitude at church, in my neighborhood, wherever.”

Bernie was recently elected to the Judge of Elections in West Grove, Pa, Precinct 2 and his 2-year term begins today, May 21.  His role is to make sure all of the election rules are being followed, oversee the counting process and then deliver the sealed ballots to the county voter services.

This 27-year veteran of the car business is a father of 3 daughters, one of which works at Scott Honda in the Accounting Office and happened to be our January Employee of the Month. Gwen Hughes talked with us about what she’s learned from her father.

“His helpful nature has inspired me to also be active in the community and volunteer and give back,” said the recent graduate of West Chester University.

When Bernie isn’t selling Hondas or helping out in the community, he’s helping himself in his garden.

“I’m real into organic gardening and raised bed gardening, but I don’t always have the time I’d like, but it’s fun for me.  However with three daughters I’m going to be selling cars for a long time,” he said with a big smile.

McDevitt’s are McThrilled with Son’s Scholarship from PAA

(photo caption: Matthew McDevitt (center) stands with (left to right) Darren Miller of PAA, his father Jim McDevitt, mother Kim McDevitt and Duke Scott.)

We finally got to see one of those giant, over-sized checks at Scott Honda and as they usually do, it went to a great cause!

Darren Miller, senior regional manager for the Pennsylvania Automotive Association (PAA), visited us recently bearing gifts. His jumbo check was for Matthew McDevitt, the son of Assistant Parts Manager, Jim McDevitt, who was the proud recipient of a $5000 scholarship to help him pursue his passion for automotive repair.

Matthew, who was sponsored by Scott Honda of West Chester for this scholarship, was one of five outstanding students from schools across Pennsylvania awarded this $5,000 a year scholarship from the PAA, an organization who represents over 900 franchised new car and truck dealers across the state.

According to PAA to be eligible for the Automotive Technology Scholarship, applicants must be currently enrolled in, or seeking enrollment in, an automotive technology program.  Applicants must demonstrate their interest in pursuing a career in automotive technology through their acceptance to an automotive training program and the support of a sponsoring Pennsylvania new car or truck dealer.

Matthew is currently enrolled at the Automotive Training Center in Exton, Pa. where he is studying Diesel Technology. He explains what drew him to this field, which has a great need for qualified technicians.

“When I was young, first I worked on lawn mowers, than cars, so I had small engines pretty well figured out.  So I thought bigger engines would be even more interesting, I figured bigger is better,” he told us.

Scott Honda has a longstanding relationship with PAA and Vice President Duke Scott is a current Board Member and President Craig C. Scott was the Chairman in 1999.

“Pennsylvania dealers, like Scott Honda, are dedicated and strong supporters of their communities,” said John Devlin, President of PAA. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to show our support for Pennsylvania’s students by awarding scholarships each year, and we view this program as an investment in these students’ future.”

Devlin went on to say, “A strong service department is crucial to the entire dealership’s success. The people working there must be problem solvers with excellent computer and math skills and technical aptitude. Because high growth and technological advances are expected in the field over the next ten years, the demand for Automotive Technicians is growing.”

It’s the problem solving that Matthew likes best.

“I pride myself on my ability to perform diagnostics as well as repairs,” he wrote in the essay submitted for the scholarship. “Not just asking ‘what’, but asking the all-important question ‘why’ (a part failed).  This expertise, to me, is the most important skill that a technician can posses.”

Matthew’s mother, Kim McDevitt, was not surprised at all by her son’s interest in taking things apart and rebuilding them.

“When he was 3-years-old he built a Grandfather Clock out of K’nex…and it worked!” she told Sconda Blog, laughing. “We are very proud of him.”

Matthew’s scholarship is renewable for $5,000 a year and therefore, could equal up to $10,000 if he maintains high enough grades.  “The cost of college is daunting for today’s students and their families. We wanted to recognize the hard work of these students with an award that provides substantial assistance to ease their financial burden,” Devlin concluded.

“We were honored to have sponsored such a smart, hard-working young man in Matthew,” Duke Scott said. “And we’re also very happy for his father Jim, who has been a loyal and very important member of the Scott Honda family for over 25 years!”

Scott Select is Playing Throwback Thursday

20130516-140226.jpg

Scott Select has decided to start playing a little #tbt or #ThrowBackThrusday as the folks on The Instagram like to call it.

We are a company born from a long family history in the car business and what a better way to display some of out great historical photos, that stretch back through four generations and 83 (almost 84) years, than using “Throwback Thursday”.

This photo is from 1941 and was taken on Lancaster Avenue in Ardmore, Pa. This beautiful scene was one a series of images taken that night of both the exterior and the showroom. We loved these old photographs so much that we restored over 20 of them and lined the walls with them at Scott Select and created a history wall at Scott Honda (aka @ScondaBlog) with detailed accounts of our evolution.

Check us out next Thursday for the classic showroom shot from this same evening!

Scott Honda Donates Car to the Unionville High School After Prom for 6th Straight Year

20130502-111935.jpg

Yesterday Scott Honda delivered this year’s Unionville High School Prom Car, which is to be raffled off at the After Prom to a lucky Junior or Senior.

The raffle will take place at 4 a.m. in the wee hours of the morning as an incentive to keep students there, in a safe, controlled, drug and alcohol-free environment instead of the alternative.

This year we donated a 2004 Honda Civic EX coupe with 123,000 miles and a clean Carfax of course. This beauty will be parked outside of UHS for the next 2 weeks before the prom so students and parents can get a good look at the prize!

As I was taking this photo yesterday a student yelled out the window of his older Chevy Caprice, “That’s gonna be mine! I’m gonna win that!” As he drove down the street…mission accomplished!

Scott Employee of the Month : April – Desiree Wood

Desiree Wood, April Employee of the Month, Scott HondaDesiree Wood was working at a pizza shop that she and her husband owned in West Chester and one day, while she was wearing her Automotive Training Center shirt, some Scott Honda employees came in for lunch.

“They saw my shirt and said ‘You should come work with us at Scott Honda,’” she told The Spinnaker, and the rest is history.

For the last five-and-a-half years Desiree has been a technician at Scott Honda and was awarded the honor of Employee of the Month for April.

“Desiree has always been very helpful,” said Don Chandler, former Service Manager.  “Whenever we need help on a Saturday she doesn’t hesitate to volunteer.”

For Desiree it’s a no-brainer to help on Saturdays.

“A lot of the guys have kids, so I feel like it’s a little bit easier for me because I don’t, but that won’t always be the case,” she says hinting at having a family of her own one day.

In an industry dominated by men, Desiree initially worried that there may be some double standards.

“I was skeptical at first that I would be treated different, but no one actually did treat me different at all, which was great,” she told us.

As a child Desiree was always into dirt bikes, which ignited her passion for mechanical work which led her to Scott Honda.  She began as an Express Technician, then moved to Accessory Installations and now she works in the Main Shop.

“She’s very helpful,” says Assistant Service Manager John Bottke.  “If we’re in a pinch she is always willing to help out with accessory installation when we need it.”

When she’s not working on Hondas Desiree enjoys playing her “favorite game of all-time” Call of Duty. She also still loves riding dirt bikes and motorcycles and she enjoys fishing as well.

Congratulations Desiree!

Scott Honda Celebrates our 1st “InstaSale”

20130423-123711.jpg

We wanted to thank @oneill aka Michael O’Neill & his wonderful family for being our 1st official “InstaSale”! A vehicle sold purely through the power of Instagram & the connections it can help form.

Michael & I connected via my personal account (@douglaspscott) because we live in the same town and after he learned that I work at Scott Honda an opportunity to sell him his “new diaper hauler” as he calls it, emerged.

He and his wife were kind enough to share this photo with @ScondaBlog and I thought this was a great success story about the power of this great social media platform that we were an early adopter of (read more).
